Story Title: Ladybug’s Big Secret
Written by: Tsaiyu Chang
Lily was a little ladybug. She had a shiny red shell and beautiful black spots. Everyday after school, Lily and her friends played under the oak tree, jumping in crunchy leaves, and zooming down twigs like slides.
Herc the Beetle lived in the oak tree. He was strong and helpful. He could move heavy things and dig tunnels. He always knew where to find the sweetest fruit to eat.
“There is a big rock in the way… ” said Lily.
“Don’t worry!” Herc said. He pushed the pebble aside with ease.
“We love Herc! We love Herc!” cheered the ladybugs.
One afternoon, Lily arrived early at the oak tree. Her friends were running late.
“Hi Lily. Playing alone today?” asked Herc the Beetle.
“Yeah. They’ll be here soon.”
“I built a secret tunnel slide. Wanna try it?”
“Whoa… It looks amazing! I love slides!”
“I built it just for you because you’re my special little ladybug,” Herc said, patting her head.
Lily blushed. “Let’s go!”
Herc and Lily slid down together. As they zipped through the slide, Herc tickled Lily’s belly. She giggled, but something inside her felt… strange.
“That was fun! Let’s go again!” Herc said.
Lily hesitated. “Um… No… I don’t want to play anymore,” she said softly.
Herc frowned. “That makes me sad.”
Lily didn’t want to upset Billy. “Okay… maybe one more time,” she said quietly.
Herc carried her back to the top.
“Whooo!”
As they slid down again, Herc tickled Lily all over, even places she didn’t like. Lily’s heart thumped fast. She liked playing with Herc, but she didn’t like the way he was touching her.
Just then, she heard her ladybug friends.
“Sorry we’re late!” they called.
Lily felt a huge relief. She didn’t want to be alone with the beetle anymore.
Herc leaned in close. “Don’t tell anyone about our slide. It’s our little secret. If you tell, I won’t let you play here anymore. Your friends will be sad, and it will be all YOUR fault!”
That night, Lily couldn’t sleep. She kept thinking about that secret. She felt alone in the dark. Her tummy felt weird, like scared butterflies fluttering in all the wrong ways.
At breakfast, her mom noticed something was bugging Lily. “Lily, sweetie, is something wrong?”
“If I tell you a secret, will I get in trouble, mom?”
Mama Ladybug smiled gently. “Of course you won’t! You can trust me.”
Lily took a deep breath. “Herc told me to keep a secret about a game…”
Mama Ladybug listened carefully as Lily shared everything. When she finished, Mama Ladybug wrapped her in a warm hug.
“You did the right thing! I am so proud of you,” Mama said. “No one should ever make you keep a secret that makes you feel bad. And no one should touch you in ways that make you uncomfortable.”
That day, Mama Ladybug spoke to the other little ladybugs, and together, they made sure everyone learned about safe and unsafe secrets.
“No bad secrets, only happy surprises!”
“No bad secrets, only happy surprises!”
“No bad secrets, only happy surprises!”
Lily still loved playing with her friends, but she worried. “Does this mean we can’t play under the oak tree anymore?”
Mama Ladybug smiled. “I have a happy surprise for you!”
She led Lily and her friends to a brand-new playground—a meadow filled with crunchy leaves and bigger tunnel slides. There was even a little pond to splash in. It was perfect!
Best of all, Lily never had to feel sad about a secret again. She knew she could always talk to someone she trusted, and that made her heart feel light and happy.
